Maternity Reflexology

Studies have shown the effectiveness of reflexology on
issues important to expectant mothers.

Research shows that women given reflexology
during pregnancy or labour experienced shorter labour
times and less analgesia use. In addition, reflexology
aided with the problems of retention of the placenta
and primary inertia during labour as well as helping the women avoid surgery or medication.
(See the Expectant mothers helped by reflexology information below).

The Gentle Birth Method book by Dr Gowri Motha has quickly grown in popularity, with the likes of
Gwyneth Paltrow, Gabby Logan, Kate Moss, Stella McCartney and Elle MacPherson helping to promote the benefits of following it, to thousands of pregnant women across the UK. Dr Gowri Motha writes in her book, that Reflexology is one of the most powerful tools in her programme, and describes the benefits of Reflexology treatments throughout pregnancy which include:

• Reducing and normalising high blood pressure
• Normalizing low blood pressure
• Elimination of oedema and reduced swelling in feet and ankles
• Prevention of heartburn
• Improved sleep quality
• Clearing headaches
• Relieving varicose veins
• Clearing pelvic congestion
• Improved lymphatic drainage
• Helping to aid digestion by boosting the pancreatic secretion of digestive hormones, the pancreas can become sluggish during pregnancy due to the effect of the placental hormones.
• Oxygenating the baby by improving the blood flow within the whole body, helping the uterus and the baby's placenta.
• Helping to carry the baby to term
• Can be used to initiate labour if you are overdue, thereby reducing the need for medical induction at hospital
• Intensifying contractions during labour and shortening labour as a result

Expectant Mothers Helped by Reflexology

Reflexology during pregnancy
And as if all of those wasn't a good enough reason to try this extremely relaxing and calming therapy, a further study has also shown that it can reduce labour time by over 60%. The study conducted in London by Dr Gowri Motha showed that women having regular reflexology treatments (10 reflexology sessions from 20 weeks) had an average first stage labour of 5-6 hours, compared to textbook expectations of 16-24 hours. It also found that Stage 2 and 3 of labour combined was less than 25 mins for those having had reflexology, compared to more typical experiences of 1-2 hours.
In addition, 89.0% of the women experienced a normal delivery.

Reflexology during labour
Research demonstrated that reflexology given to women during labour showed a 90% effective rate as a pain killer during delivery. Another study showed an effective analgesia rate of 94.4%.
A study of 593 women giving birth at a Danish hospital found that 89.7% of those who chose reflexology with no analgesic drugs, felt it reduced pain, with only 4 of them requiring additional pain medication.(Easier Births Using Reflexology." by Gabriella Bering Liisberg, "Tidsskrift for Jordemodre," No. 3, 1989).
This study also showed that not only can it help reduce pain but it can also help bring about labour, often without the need for further intervention in about half the cases.
Research showed that, among women given reflexology work during labour, 11 of the 14 experiencing retention of the placenta after giving birth avoided an operation to correct the situation.

Lactation in new mothers
Reflexology also helps mother to breast feed their babies more successfully, by helping to produce the milk needed by the new born in a much quicker time.
Research has also shown that new mothers who received reflexology work initiated lactation much quicker (in 43 hours) than in comparison to those not given reflexology (67 hours). At 72 hours satisfactory lactation was documented in 98% of the foot reflexology group and 67% of not given reflexology. The reflexology work helped avoid use of drugs in lactation that may be harmful to the baby.

Post partum
Research shows that reflexology can make a significant difference to women in the post natal period.  Symptoms such as Anxiety, Depression, Appetite and Haemorrhoids can  be helped by  reflexology.
In controlled studies of post partum women reflexology has shown to be effective for women experiencing changes in appetite; lactation; as well as anxiety and depression, just 6 hours of reflexology work demonstrated a significant difference in all the symptoms compared to when compared to control groups using no reflexology.
Research also shows that post partum women recovering from Caesarean section showed a significantly shorter first voiding time when receiving reflexology as compared to the control group. And the also showed a significant difference in time to first defecation when receiving reflexology for three days as compared to the control group.

Pregnant women given 10 foot reflexology sessions from 20 weeks into their pregnancies to term experienced a better labour time than textbook figures, it can reduce labour time by over 60%. The average for those receiving reflexology work was: first stage, 5 hours; second stage, 16 minutes; and third stage, 7 minutes. This compared to textbook figures of 16 to 24 hour's first stage, and, 1 to 2 hour's second stage. In addition, 89% of the women experienced a normal delivery.
