The healing art of reflexology

Reflexology is a method of bringing about relaxation, balance and healing through the stimulation of specific points on the feet, or the hands. Following illness, stress, injury or disease, the body is in a state of "imbalance", and vital energy pathways are blocked, preventing the body from functioning effectively. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and encourage healing.

It is based on the concept that the energy pathways, which end in reflex areas on the feet and the hands, connect every part of the body. Sensitive, trained hands can detect imbalances working over these reflexes in a precise and systematic way and, by applying a light but controlled pressure, the reflexologist can release blockages and stimulate the body to achieve its own natural state of wholeness and good health, to help heal the whole person not just the symptons.

Tension or congestion in any part of the body is mirrored in the corresponding reflex areas on the feet, and treating the whole foot can have a deeply relaxing and healing effect on the whole body. As the feet are very receptive, working on their reflexes is especially beneficial in clearing and balancing the body and restoring homeostasis.

This gentle therapy encourages the body to heal itself, often counteracting a lifetime of misuse.

The practice of stimulating the body's own healing energies by using pressure points on the feet is not new. It has appeared in many different cultures around the world and throughout history. Earliest traces have been found over 5,000 years ago in China, Japan and Egypt. It spread to Europe in the Dark Ages, and both peasants and the aristocracy used forms of "pressure point" therapy in the Middle Ages. The therapy was re-discovered in the late 1890's by a Dr. William Fitzgerald and introduced into the United States as "reflexology", arriving in Britain, in its present form, in the 1960's.
